Grandma’s Myths: Is It Really Bad to Drink Water with Meals or Lie Down After?
“Don’t drink while you’re eating—you’ll dilute your stomach acid!”
“Don’t lie down after lunch—your stomach will hurt!”
If you grew up hearing this, you’re not alone. Many of us were taught these “rules” at the dinner table. But are they actually true? Let’s take a closer look and clear up the confusion.
💧 Drinking Water with Meals: its totally Fine
One of the biggest myths is that water somehow “dilutes” your digestive acid and spoils digestion. But your stomach isn’t a fragile chemistry experiment.
Here’s what really happens:
Your stomach is not a glass of juice that will be watered down. Most of the water that you drink will travel along the lining of your stomach and then on into your digestive system. Your body is very intelligent. If it needs more, your stomach will simply make more acid. Water will actually aid in digestion. It will break down the food, making it easier to pass through your system.
Of course, there are a few things to keep in mind. Ice-cold water may slightly slow digestion for some people. Cold drinks can cause bloating. And if you’re not chewing properly and trying to chew large bites, that’s not good either. Otherwise? A few small sips of room-temperature water during a meal are perfectly fine. Just don’t drink too much.
🛋️Is it really okay to lie down after Eating ?
Another common warning: “Don’t lie down after you eat, or the food will come back up!”
In reality, digestion doesn’t depend on gravity the way people think it does.
Food passes through your esophagus by muscle contractions (peristalsis), not just because you are standing upright. There is a sphincter muscle at the entrance of your stomach that opens in one direction, which helps keep things in place. A brief rest, 15 to 30 minutes, can actually help digestion. Resting, especially on your left side, helps increase blood flow to your digestive system and improves your rest and digestive system,
When your body is relaxed, digestion tends to work more efficiently.
That said, there are exceptions.
👇 When you should be careful:
If you have eaten too much, you may be likely to have heartburn if you lie down. If you have reflux or a hiatal hernia, it is probably best to remain upright after eating—check with your Doctor. It is not a good idea to fall asleep directly after eating a large meal because digestion slows down during sleep.
For most healthy people, though, a short rest after eating is not harmful—and can even feel great.

The Bottom Line
Our bodies are much smarter and more flexible than the strict rules of food dictate. If you are thirsty, drink. If you want to take a rest for a few minutes after lunch, take a rest. Just don’t overdo it and listen to your body.
Now I’m curious—
Do you drink water with your meals? Or are you a fan of a lying down after meals?
